Review for "Archetypes", Propeller Centre for Visual Art - April 30 - May 11, 2008

"Elizabeth Preiss’s carefully linked collection, Archetypes, subtly explores the evocative terrain of human history and memory. Primordial red runs through it, a vivid arterial highway of the mind throbbing with life and death, a haunting visual echo of Auden’s “terrible beauty”. Moving from the resonant poppy fields of France to the iconic wrought-iron gate arching over Auschwitz to the ghostly silhouette of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini hanging unceremoniously in the Piazzale Loreto in Milan (a powerful treatment inspired by a photograph originally taken by Preiss’s own father). These images artfully represent the 20th century’s blood-soaked history and their indelible legacy."
